Threads of Home

Threads of Home is a 360° virtual reality film that invites viewers into an immersive exploration of South Asian culture, identity, and belonging. Developed by students from the BA (Hons) Fashion Imaging and Illustration course at London College of Fashion, the project was created in partnership with Newham Libraries, The Space, Cream Productions, and Arts Council England, and was showcased as part of the LCF After Dark: Past/Future Patterns event.

The project began during South Asian Heritage Month, when Newham communities took part in a series of creative workshops across the borough. Led by artist Isher Dhiman, these sessions encouraged participants to reflect on their lived experiences through mindful drawing, writing, and shared storytelling. The resulting illustrations and narratives captured themes of home, celebration, family traditions, and the everyday moments that shape cultural identity.

From this rich archive of community-generated artwork, LCF graduates Ayushi Banerjee, Ivana Lam, Khadijah Bailey, and Paulina Prawdjik crafted the visual direction and storyboard for the VR experience. They transformed the handmade illustrations and recorded stories into vivid digital assets, weaving together colour, texture, sound, and movement to build an immersive world that honours the voices and experiences of South Asian communities in Newham.

Guided by a narrative written by Newham writer Sharmila Chauhan and voiced by actor Shona Gulati, the VR film takes viewers on a sensory journey through memories: blending family rituals, festive moments, and the emotional connections that define a sense of home. Their storytelling brings to life the emotional threads of identity, memory, and connection that shape the experiences of East London’s South Asian communities.

Threads of Home will be touring Newham libraries throughout November 2025, with opportunities for the public to experience the VR film on the following dates:

  • 14 November, 4–7pm — Manor Park Library

  • 15 November, 4–6pm — Forest Gate Library

  • 18 November — 11am–12pm at Plaistow Library; 11am–12pm at Green Street Library; 12–2pm at Stratford Library; 11am–1pm at Custom House Library

  • 20 November — 11am–7pm at Canning Town Library; 11am–12pm & 4–6pm at North Woolwich Library

  • 21 November, 4–8pm — East Ham Library

We look forward to welcoming you to this immersive celebration of heritage, creativity, and community.
